Dr. F. Ann Draughon
Dr. F. Ann Draughon
Dr. Frances Ann Draughon is a professor in the University of Tennessee Department of Food Science and Technology and co-director of the University of Tennessee Food Safety Center of Excellence. Her areas of research include: Food Microbiology, Food Toxicology, Food Protection and Biosecurity.

Dr. Draughon has authored over 100 publications and has made over 200 invited presentations over the last 25 years. She served as the first female president of the International Association for Food Protection in 1995. She is a recipient of the 1993 Southern Association of Agricultural Scientists Professional Scientist Award, the 1999 Gamma Sigma Delta Award of Excellence for Research, the 2000 Harry Haverland Citation Award for Lifetime Service to Food Protection and many other awards.

In 2002, Dr. Draughon was named co-director of $5 million University of Tennessee Food Safety Center of Excellence. The Food Safety Center of Excellence was established by the University of Tennessee in December 2000, as part of the University's 21st Century Research Initiative. The Center is one of the University's nine Research Centers of Excellence. The Center will develop and evaluate strategies to destroy or control food-borne pathogens and reduce the occurrence of food-borne illnesses. Current research developed by the Institute's food safety initiative has already attracted more than $18 million in federal and private support.

Recently (2004), Dr. Draughon was named Director, National Center for Food Safety and Security, Center for Microbial Diversity and Ecology. She has directed over 70 dissertations and thesis since 1979. More information about her students is available here. She holds a PhD in Food Science (Microbiology) from the University of Georgia. She has two adult sons.
